After a break of two months, the KIDS walking group reunited for their second walk of 2011 / 2012 training program. Our group met in Kinnitty and decided to complete the Kinnitty Forest Loop walk, which is part of the many walks around the Slieve Blooms. There are walks to suit all ages and levels of fitness and full details of the walks can be found at

http://www.slievebloom.ie

For a number of the group it was their first walk since we returned from completing the first part of KIDS Camino Portugese 4 year challenge back in May. So the forest look walk was ideal, as the walks give lots of options in terms of terrain and length to suit the different levels of fitness.

It was a lively and chatty group that set off from the centre of Kinnitty and needless to say the laughter and fun soon started. It was a beautiful morning and the sun beamed down on the group of walkers amid a few black clouds. Undeterred, the group continued out towards Kinnitty Castle before turning off into the forest. We walked through lovely forest areas which provided breathtaking views of the Offaly countryside. Incline of the walk was gradual so the impact on the walkers was minimal compared to some of the conditions that we encountered in Portugal in May. It was a nice ramble and as always great discussions fortified by a lovely picnic under a tree from the rain. Our lovely picnic provided by Pauline and despite the rain the food was tasty and deliceious. Pauline and Cora provided insight to the local history of Kinnitty Castle and its ghosts – if its an Irish castle, there has to be a ghost story!!

After walking for over two hours we arrived back at our starting point to enjoy once again the lovely hospitality of Pauline and Peter.
The group were staying over and after a rest and shower we had BBQ at the Slieve Bloom pub in Kinnitty village. We all loved this pub – great atmosphere and great food and we can highly recommend it as somewhere to stop at even if you are just driving through Kinnitty. What the group liked was the community atmosphere, everyone knew each other and we received a warm welcome.

Overall, our re-union walk was a great success, we got to meet up, have a walk and then a knees up. If you get the chance check out the Slieve Bloom walks and have a great days walking – its only two hours from Dublin.

Click HERE if you would like to see some photos of our walks.

What an amazing week everyone had in Portugal. The walkers walked over the target of 155Km, about 180Km was the total and they still had energy to enjoy a tour around Lisbon on their day off. What made us even prouder was to hear all the walkers give eachother support when they thought it was too tough by saying “go on, we are doing this for the KIDS in Argentina” and that was enough to keep going.

We cannot thank enough to everyone who supported the walkers, who sponsored the walk in general, who sent texts of support, calls encouraging everyone to keep going but specially to all the ones who decided to join us in this adventure. It would have not been even half as good if it wasn’t for you. THANK YOU.

We want to say an other big massive THANK YOU to an other of our greatest supporters, Lorraine.

Lorraine joined us in 2010’s walk and ever since she has been one of our most constant supporters. Not only with fund raisers but also in creating awareness of the problem our children in Argentina have to face. She single handedly organised an incredible quiz night in Clonmel on the 26th of March. She raised an incredible amount of money for the Portuguese Camino Challenge of 2011.

Lorraine, it is a pleasure to count with you as a big part of our NGO. Thank you.

Also, a special thank you to Peter, Pauline, Cora, Aoife and P.J.
